Health and Social Care

Health and Social Care

Health and Social Care is a growing department which provides excellent learning for students within the college. It is very outward facing and compliments the college’s Applied Learning and Business and Enterprise specialist status. One of the key objectives of the Department is to build links between the college and the local community to enhance the learning experience of our students. The department is very active in organising speakers and visitors to the college as well as arranging trips. In Health and Social Care at both Key Stages 4 and 5, work experience forms an essential part of the course.

The department has a strong belief in supporting students to achieve their full potential. We believe that EVERY student is capable of making a contribution to their future and must be supported to realise and release this potential.

For Health and Social Care (Exam board Edexcel) we offer the following courses:

BTEC Level 1 (Exam board Edexcel) - This is offered to our KS4 learners to enable them to progress onto a GCSE or Level 2 standard.

BTEC Level 2 (Exam board Edexcel) -This is offered at KS5 to our learners who require an additional year to improve their GCSE equivalent grades. Students will be able to re-take GCSE Maths and English.

BTEC Level 3, A Level Health and Social Care (Exam board Edexcel) - At KS5 the department offers two routes of study. Students can opt for A Levels with a single award carrying one A Level grade. Students will complete four units of coursework and sit two externally set exams in the two years of study.

Students opting for the BTEC Level 3 will achieve two BTEC grades equivalent to two A level grades with similar UCAS points. Assessment is by completing coursework portfolios. Work experience placement is central to the BTEC level 3 programme.

GCSE Health and Social Care Double Award (Exam board OCR)

This is a popular optional subject at KS4. Students will complete two controlled assessments and sit two externally set exams in the two years of study. A work experience placement is a key feature of the coursework in Year 10, and First Aid training compliments the exam preparation of the course in Year 11.
