A Level Maths

NMBEC currently offer two different A level courses in Maths; Mathematics and Further Maths

Content    
Mathematics is the bedrock of nearly all science and economic based disciplines, from Physicists and Geographers to Bankers and Engineers. A student should always consider taking Mathematics to at least AS Level to prove to future employers that they are comfortable dealing with problem solving and calculations.
 
The A-Level Mathematics course is made up of 6 modules.
 
¿   4 modules of Core (Pure) Maths
 
¿   2 modules of Applied Maths (normally Statistics)
 
Assessment     
In Year 12 students will complete 3 modules:
 
¿   Core Maths 1 - 6663
¿   Core Maths 2 - 6664
¿   Statistics 1      - 6683
 
In Year 13 students will complete an additional 3 modules:
 
¿   Core Maths 3 - 6665
¿   Core Maths 4 - 6666
¿   Statistics 2      - 6684
 
Core Maths is essentially about number, algebra and geometry.
Statistics is Applied Maths and is about how Maths can be used in the real world.
 
All examinations last 1 hour and 30 minutes and have 75 marks. Core 1 is a non-calculator paper. Students can use calculators in all the other papers.
 
Special Requirements       
  • Minimum requirement for entry to this course is a grade B at GCSE, although a grade A is preferable.
  •  Students will require a scientific calculator.

 The course is made up of 6 modules.
 
¿   3 modules of Core (Pure) Maths
 
¿   3 modules of Applied Maths (2 Mechanics and 1 Decision)
 
Assessment     
 
In Year 12 students will complete 3 modules:
 
¿   Further Pure Maths 1 - 6667
¿   Further Pure Maths 2 - 6668
¿   Mechanics 1 - 6677
 
In Year 13 students will complete an additional 3 modules:
 
¿   Further Pure Maths 3 - 6669
¿   Decision Maths 1 - 6689
¿   Mechanics 2 - 6678
 
Further Pure Maths is essentially about number, algebra and geometry.
Mechanics and Decision Maths are Applied Maths and are about how Maths can be used in the real world.
 
Each Unit is tested by 1 hour 30 min paper.
