NMBEC Citizenship

Since its introduction nearly a decade ago, Citizenship has become a core feature of the new national curriculum, recognising the importance of preparing young people for participation in democratic society as informed citizens, empowered to make a change concerning the issues that affect them.

Throughout the school, citizenship issues are addressed through a range of subjects, particularly PSHE, English and the Humanities subjects. In year 9, it is also taught in discrete lessons twice a week. In year 10 and 11, it is offered as a full GCSE option, following the OCR course. In addition, citizenship is pervasive in the whole ethos of the school, thanks to a healthy Student Voice, as well as frequent and ongoing projects of social enterprise and charity fundraising.
In lessons, students explore core political values such as democracy, freedom, justice, equality, tolerance, rights and responsibilities. They learn about how important political decisions are made on a local, national and international level, and through investigating topical and controversial issues, they develop their skills of enquiry and critical thinking, and of advocacy and debate. In addition, all students have the opportunity to organise their own active citizenship campaign, developing their ability to take informed and responsible action.
