NMBEC Design And Technology

The Design and Technology department of NMBEC is housed in a purpose built

building and is well equipped throughout. The department comprises 2 fully
equipped workshops, one with an Interactive Whiteboard and projector; 2
well-appointed Food Technology rooms; a Graphic Products Studio with Interactive
Whiteboard and data projector and 15 networked PCs; a dedicated Textiles room andseparate CAD/CAM suite.

The Design and Technology department is staffed by 6 fulltime members of staff, all teaching a variety of subjects at different key stagesand post-16. The department also benefits from 2 full time technicians whomonitor stock, tools and equipment throughout all of the specialist rooms.

Theyalso prepare materials and resources for use in lessons.
Throughout Key Stage 3, all students follow a program of study that includes
Product Design, Food Technology and Textiles. Students will develop a variety of
skills and knowledge and are regularly assessed against National Curriculum
levels.

All students are expected to set targets for themselves at the start of each
project and to produce graphical work of an increasingly high standard. In the
summer term all students sit a formal examination to assess their progress and to
prepare them for the rigours of Key Stage 4. In the spring term of Year 9
students select a Technology subject to follow through to GCSE level.

In Key Stage 4, students will follow the AQA exam board program of study for
their option choice of Food Technology, Textiles Technology, Resistant Materials
or Graphic Products. 60 percent of the marks available are for their coursework
but knowledge and understanding is developed and reinforced still further in
Years 10 and 11 through projects and focused practical tasks.
All work is assessed against the GCSE criteria, set down by the exam board and at
all times, progress is closely monitored.

The department also runs a variety of clubs for homework and extra curricular
activities for both Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4, all of which are designed to
enhance the provision and awareness of Design and Technology issues across the
school.

The department is also involved in a number of whole school activities that are
related to the Business and Enterprise specialism. These include the Post-16 NFTE
course and various Enterprise Masterclasses.

NMBEC Cooking Spaces Project nearing completion !

READY STEADY COOK !

Food Technology at NMBEC will never quite be the same again !  After securing £300,000 of funding via the Cooking Spaces programme, these 2 rooms are receiving a massive overhaul and facelift.

Both Food Technology rooms are being refurbished to allow for the teaching of GCSE and A Level Food Technology as well as allowing the development of Hospitality and Catering which will be offered this year to Yr 9 students for the first time.

Food Tech 1 is already finished and in use and some of the students have commented that :

“Wow - it is so big “

“Love the different colours and stainless steel worktops”

“It's just like the Star Trek Enterprise”

This room has remote controlled height adjustable benches to accommodate disabled students as well as some really funky coloured cabinets and cupboards (Hot Pink, Mint and Cyan !).  FT2 has gone with a more zesty Hot Pink, Lime Green and Orange colour scheme !

Our contractors, Woodside Contract Services Ltd, have worked closely with our architects Feilden Clegg Bradley and Project Managers (Edu PM Ltd) to incorporate all of the ideas of our own Food Technology staff to design a space that will allow all students to cook at the same time in a modern, state of the art practical space.  We are grateful to them all for the time and attention to detail they have put into this project on our behalf.

See below for some images of the new rooms !

Teacher’s Demonstration Bench FT1

As well as watching the demonstrations from tiered seating (pink of course !) the students will also see overhead shots which will be projected via a visualiser onto the interactive whiteboard so they can see everything happening on the hob and worktops !

Adjustable Height Hob and Sink Area

In addition to the 2 refurbished rooms we are also converting the current Graphics Products room into a Hospitality Suite to allow students to be able to prepare and then serve food to the general public and invited guests !  The furniture in this room will be adaptable to allow it to be used for classroom teaching, meetings or as a cafe.

WS1 is not being left out either, the old metal working benches will be replaced by more modern workbenches to make Resistant Materials lessons more comfortable.

Finally, the former Textiles room, WS3, is being converted into an ICT room for the faculty to use and will accommodate 24 large screen PCs and A3 colour printers – so all in all it is a fabulous project that has benefitted all of the subject areas in DT and not just Food Technology !
