The Art department at NMBEC aims to create a stimulating environment where projects are designed to encourage observation and awareness of the visual world. We aim to teach students to use creative visual language in order to express feelings, thoughts and ideas with confidence.
All students take Art and Design at Key Stage 3. To compliment this subject at Key Stage 3 we also teach Art History to enrich our students Art experience. At GCSE and A Level we offer both Art and Design and Graphic Design.
We also offer the BTEC first Certificate in Art and Design at Key Stage 4 giving a more vocational focus for learning.
Students have opportunities to explore different aspects of Art including clay, collage and printmaking, as well as core skills of painting and drawing.
Students also build on their knowledge and understanding of lettering, layout and 3D construction.
These subjects aim to show students the role and context of Art and Design in todays society and the career paths that can be followed within the visual arts. Students will develop an understanding of Art and Design in a wide variety of areas including cultural, industrial and historical aspects as well as that of our environment.
The department is evolving and dynamic, we look to use current technology to compliment more traditional Art and Design skills within the context of Business and Enterprise framework of the college.
Students gain invaluable experience of Art in the classroom and have regular visits and trips to galleries, museums and places of interest. This is vital in stimulating students creativity and thinking. Recent visits have included the British Library, Kew Gardens, The National Portrait Gallery and Tate Modern.
