NMBEC Maths

The Maths department delivers a curriculum with varied teaching and learning styles to stimulate and excite students. Our new KS3 curriculum is designed to meet the needs of our students by initially teaching, learning and assessing in three groups; Foundation, Intermediate and Higher.

All students cover work in Number, Algebra, Shape and Space and Handling Data. Investigation and Project work is a common thread throughout the Maths curriculum.

We offer an innovative, broad and balanced curriculum which also is differentiated further at the classroom level. Students experience a wide range of Maths teaching, with modern interactive activities such as thinking skills, group and investigational work, self and peer assessment opportunities, presentations, games and puzzles throughout their subject studies.

Student performance is closely monitored and groupings are reviewed twice annually. The expectation is that every student knows the level/grade at which she is performing and what she needs to do to progress to a higher level/grade.

The KS4 curriculum is now assessed by examination only (no coursework element). In order to focus the students' learning the curriculum is delivered at three broad levels. Our aim is for all students to improve on their minimum target grade which is set at the end of KS3. Students are encouraged to maximize their progress through indepentdent learning.

The KS5 Curriculum follows the Edexcel modular course which is delivered through 6 modules, 3 examined in Year 12 and 3 in Year 13. There is no coursework aspect to this qualification. Currently the students cover Core Mathematics and Statistics, although this may vary from year to year. Students who achieve a B or higher at Higher Tier GCSE will be eligible to study Mathematics at KS5

GCSE Statistics follows the Edexcel course. It is offered through the KS4 Options and is taught over Years 10 and 11

FUNCTIONAL SKILLS

Functional Skills is the application of maths to solve 'real life' problems. This is already included in the Maths Schemes of Work, but we are expanding the problems and solutions to ensure that Maths is a skill for life. All students will need to pass the Functional Skills exam to achieve a GCSE in Maths (from 2011). Students taking the Higher GCSE Paper will need to pass this at Level 2 to achieve Grade C or above.

Financial Literacy

We are currently working with the Institute of Financial Services (the School of Finance) to improve our students' financial capability skills, broaden their qualifications and career opportunities. There is a clear progression route to a degree course in finances. Once students are registered for these exams, they have access to tuition materials and practice papers on-line.

Maths club takes place 3 times per week. Students are welcome to get further support with classwork/homework/project work or to tackle games, puzzles or even challenge competitions. Additionally a club is held weekly for Years 7 and 8 to play mathematical games.
