NMBEC Design And Technology
The Design and Technology department of NMBEC is housed in a purpose built
building and is well equipped throughout. The department comprises 2 fully
equipped workshops, one with an Interactive Whiteboard and projector; 2
well-appointed Food Technology rooms; a Graphic Products Studio with Interactive
Whiteboard and data projector and 15 networked PCs; a dedicated Textiles room andseparate CAD/CAM suite.
The Design and Technology department is staffed by 6 fulltime members of staff, all teaching a variety of subjects at different key stagesand post-16. The department also benefits from 2 full time technicians whomonitor stock, tools and equipment throughout all of the specialist rooms.
Theyalso prepare materials and resources for use in lessons.
Throughout Key Stage 3, all students follow a program of study that includes
Product Design, Food Technology and Textiles. Students will develop a variety of
skills and knowledge and are regularly assessed against National Curriculum
levels.
All students are expected to set targets for themselves at the start of each
project and to produce graphical work of an increasingly high standard. In the
summer term all students sit a formal examination to assess their progress and to
prepare them for the rigours of Key Stage 4. In the spring term of Year 9
students select a Technology subject to follow through to GCSE level.
In Key Stage 4, students will follow the AQA exam board program of study for
their option choice of Food Technology, Textiles Technology, Resistant Materials
or Graphic Products. 60 percent of the marks available are for their coursework
but knowledge and understanding is developed and reinforced still further in
Years 10 and 11 through projects and focused practical tasks.
All work is assessed against the GCSE criteria, set down by the exam board and at
all times, progress is closely monitored.
The department also runs a variety of clubs for homework and extra curricular
activities for both Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4, all of which are designed to
enhance the provision and awareness of Design and Technology issues across the
school.
The department is also involved in a number of whole school activities that are
related to the Business and Enterprise specialism. These include the Post-16 NFTE
course and various Enterprise Masterclasses.
