It is exciting times at NMBEC as the new building grows on a daily basis. As I am typing these words the second floor is up and the wooden roof timber frames have started to be placed. It will not be long before the building is water tight and the internal work can begin.
When finished this will be a true twenty-first century building for twenty-first century learning. Under ground sourced heating means a no radiators at all, a living roof and water collection points also add to the real sense of an environmentally sound structure.
Inside the building the excitement will continue. ICT, Business Studies, Art, Media Studies, Science, Health & Social Care and Textiles will all see specialist rooms dedicated to post-16 learning. With multi-purpose classrooms, break-out spaces and a Business & Enterprise Block including hot desking facilities and a performance hall we feel here at NMBEC that students really will be learning in a twenty-first century environment.
A common room with lazy chairs, laptop connection points and a breakfast bar should provide a social space for students to relax in between lessons. A study facility brimming with computers and desks will be available for study periods to be utilised effectively. There will also be a cafe open throughout the college day to allow students to refuel appropriately and provide real flexibility in regards to the times in which they learn.
Despite the adverse weather in January our contractors Apollo have been working all the hours available to ensure that this structure will be open on time and in use during the Autumn Term this year. They have also helped to enrich our curriculum with business opportunities this and allowed our students to actively engage in work related learning. It has been a rewarding partnership.
There is a real sense of excitement as this project advances and I think I speak for everyone, both staff and students, when I say that I can not wait to move in!
